Muslims in the NT
The Northern Territory shares a unique connection with Muslim culture, dating back to recorded interactions between First Nations people and Muslims predating colonization. Evidence of Muslim trading remnants has been discovered in the NT, underscoring this historical connection. The Muslim community in the region is notably diverse, comprising 27 different ethnicities. Indonesia, the largest Muslim country globally, stands as the nearest nation to the Northern Territory. UMNT serves as a central figure in the region, uniting the rich cultural heritage and service-related history of Muslims in the NT.
Over a 6 month period, UMNT have consulted with Imams, stakeholders and attendees for the Darwin CBD facility being overcapacity for Jumuβah. It was concluded that a two session Jumuβah service is imperative as it is cost effective, easy to implement and a solution that is being implemented in other large scale prayer facilities across Australia. The two session Jumuβah service service will commence on the 17 January 2025. Note, as this is an evolving service, session times and durations may be subject to change, please look out on our website and social media pages for the latest times.
